Attorney FAQ

Useful information for attorneys about the Super Lawyers nomination process, selection process, profile management and more.

Nomination process

If you are a practicing attorney, login to SuperLawyers.com by clicking the ‘Lawyer Login’ in the top-right corner. Once you login, click the ‘Nominate Your Peers’ orange button on the left side of your Dashboard. You can nominate and write comments for up to 21 attorneys (seven in-firm, seven out-of-firm and seven Rising Stars candidates). Please note that self-nominations are not accepted. View more nomination information.

If you are not a practicing attorney, send an email to [email protected] with comments and suggestions on attorneys we should consider for inclusion. These “informal nominations” carry no point value in our lawyer-rating system, but will ensure that the attorneys are placed in our candidate pool for further evaluation.

To be eligible to make nominations, an attorney must be licensed and practicing in the state where they wish to nominate. We send attorneys licensed for five or more years an e-mail invitation to nominate. Attorneys who did not receive the invitation can request a log in access link to nominate peers.

Our nomination page at SuperLawyers.com is designed to accept only in-state nominations. However, you may comment on and evaluate lawyers from other states by logging in to SuperLawyers.com and clicking the ‘Evaluate Lawyers’ blue heading on your Dashboard homepage. These comments and evaluations will be treated as “informal nominations,” which carry no point value in our rating system, but will ensure that the attorneys are placed in our candidate pool for further evaluation.

No. We maintain strict confidentiality over the balloting process.

Selection process

Super Lawyers uses a patented multiphase selection process, including nominations, independent research and peer evaluations. Read more about our selection process.

No. We maintain strict separation between research and advertising. The names of all attorneys selected by Super Lawyers are published in our print publications (if they have data verified their information) and at SuperLawyers.com at no charge whether they advertise or not.

No. We maintain strict separation between research and advertising.

The Super Lawyers list recognizes no more than 5 percent of attorneys in each state. The Rising Stars list recognizes no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in each state. To be eligible for inclusion in Rising Stars, a candidate must be either 40 years old or younger, or in practice for 10 years or less.

As a lawyer-rating service, Super Lawyers is intended to be a resource to help in the selection of legal counsel. As such, we limit the list to attorneys who can be hired and retained by the public, i.e., lawyers in private practice and Legal Aid attorneys.

Yes! You are required to complete data verification online by clicking the ‘Lawyer Login’ in the top-right corner of SuperLawyers.com. Once logged in, click the ‘Verify Info’ orange button and on the next page, click the ‘Edit Your Information’ gray button. Please review all contact and practice area information, complete the Good Standing Attestation section and click ‘Save’ to finish. Please note, only selected attorneys who data verify will be listed in their state’s print publication(s).

We perform a new round of balloting and Blue Ribbon Panel review each year, so the list undergoes some degree of change from year to year. Being listed one year does not guarantee that you will be published the following year.

Promote my selection

We ask that lawyers and firms do not publicize their selection until after the embargo date noted in your selection notifications.

Yes. If you have been selected to the Super Lawyers list, please reference the Super Lawyers Press Release template. If you have been selected to the Rising Stars list, please reference the Rising Stars Press Release template.

A lawyer on our list is not a “Super Lawyer” or a “Rising Star.” Rather, “they have been named to the 2022 Minnesota Super Lawyers list or 2022 Minnesota Rising Stars list.” When used properly, the term is not descriptive or comparative, which in some jurisdictions could raise ethical concerns. Instead, it’s a fact-based statement, and as such, is protected speech.

Other and Updates

Attorneys and Super Lawyers selectees have been the targets of phishing attempts. In some instances, phishing emails are sent that appear to come from Super Lawyers and provide a link to a website that looks like the Super Lawyers site and/or login page. Such site(s) prompt attorneys for email login credentials (username and password) and/or other sensitive information. The emails often appear personal and relevant to attorneys because the attackers have done their homework. For example, the emails may seem legitimate and may reference messages to the recipient from other actual attorneys. However, please note that in all circumstances where users are prompted to provide login credentials, these emails are not legitimate.

In addition, here are some general guidelines that should be followed to protect against phishing scams:

  • Check the sender’s email address and domain information. While scammers can spoof a sender’s organization or personal name, the sender’s associated email address (e.g. [email protected]) is often a strong clue that it is not legitimate if it does not truly come from the Super Lawyers domain (SuperLawyers.com) or the Thomson Reuters domain (ThomsonReuters.com).
  • Do not click on links or open any attachments in unsolicited emails, instant messages, social media, or chats. Such links may lead to malicious websites.
  • Examine the URL of a website destination prior to visiting or interacting with a website. Malicious websites may look identical to legitimate Super Lawyers page(s), but the URL may use a variation in spelling (e.g. suprlawyers vs. superlawyers) or a different domain suffix (e.g., .net vs. .com)
  • NEVER share sensitive information with a purported Super Lawyers page/site.  Super Lawyers will never ask you for your email credentials (Gmail/Outlook/Yahoo/etc.) or sensitive information.

If you receive an email message that seems suspicious we urge you not to click on any links and send us a message at SuperLawyers.com/contact.html.

We currently send email with the following ‘From’ addresses:

What is changing with Southern California Super Lawyers?

The timing of the Super Lawyers and Rising Stars lists is now aligned for 2025 as part of our reinvigoration of our approach to Southern California. This will simplify attorney participation deadlines for the selection process and align planning and all publication schedules.

There will be no print distribution of the 2024 Rising Stars list: no separate Rising Stars magazine or placement in Los Angeles magazine or Orange Coast magazine.

The change in the timing of Rising Stars will impact the selection process, distribution, and list presentation for attorneys selected to the 2025 Southern California Super Lawyers and Rising Stars lists.

  • 2024 Rising Stars selectees were notified of their selection on 1/11/24.
  • All 2024 Rising Stars selectees may announce and promote their selection, which is now reflected on their online profile at superlawyers.com.
  • There will be no print distribution of the 2024 Rising Stars list: no separate Rising Stars magazine or placement in Los Angeles magazine or Orange Coast magazine.
  • The timing of all list selections for 2025 will be aligned and include both Super Lawyers and Rising Stars.
  • 2024 selection to the Rising Stars list does not guarantee selection to the 2025 Rising Stars or Super Lawyers lists.

What are the key dates now for 2024 and 2025?

  • 1/11/24: 2024 Rising Stars selectees were notified
  • 5/7/24: All nominations close for the 2025 Super Lawyers and Rising Stars lists
  • 7/31/24: Selection notifications sent for 2025 Super Lawyers and Rising Stars selectees
  • 2/20/25: Print publications released

How is the Super Lawyers magazine timing changed? Why?

There is no separate Rising Stars magazine in 2024.

The 2025 Super Lawyers magazine that will now include the Rising Stars list is changing to March, 2025. The Super Lawyers patented selection process has many detailed phases and is refreshed each year. The alignment of the lists necessitates a change in the publication schedule, so the print release will be March, 2025 rather than the long-standing publication in February.

Where and how will the names of attorneys selected to the 2025 Super Lawyers or Rising Stars lists be published?

  • There is no change to the online presentation of the list selections. All selected attorneys will have a free basic listing online at superlawyers.com.
  • Selected attorneys in 2025 will be in 2025 Southern California Super Lawyers magazine, released in March, 2025. The print rules have not changed, and all selected attorneys must verify their data to be included in print.
  • Due to the larger list size in 2025, the sections in Los Angeles magazine and Orange Coast magazine will have Featured Attorneys, comprised of selected attorneys who are either Super Lawyers’ current print or online customers.

What about other sections in the partner publications?

  • We will again publish Super Lawyers In Focus in September, 2024.
  • This advertising section is available to current and past Super Lawyers or Rising Stars selectees.
  • We will publish In Focus sections in Los Angeles magazine and NEW this year in Orange Coast magazine.

What isn’t changing?

  • The Super Lawyers selection process will not change. We will continue to select 5% to the Super Lawyers list and 2.5% to the Rising Stars list.
  • For over 20 years we have had a strong partnership with Los Angeles magazine and Orange Coast magazine, and that remains going forward with energized commitment.
